Tour in Azerbaijan — Gobustan and Mud Volcanoes
Tour Itinerary
Our journey begins with one of the most important landmarks in industrial history — the world’s first mechanically drilled oil well, located in the Bibi-Heybat area of Baku.
Completed in 1846 under the guidance of engineer Vasiliy Semyonov, this well marked the beginning of modern oil extraction. It predates the famous Drake Well in the United States by more than a decade.
Thanks to this discovery, Baku became one of the largest oil centers in the world by the late 19th century, attracting industrialists such as the Nobels and the Rothschilds. Today, visitors can see the restored well and learn about its impact on the global economy.
On the way to Gobustan, from the bus window you will see the famous Bibi-Heybat oil rigs — an impressive industrial landscape that has also become a part of global cinema history.
Some scenes of the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough were filmed here, including the iconic BMW Z8 scene against the backdrop of oil structures. Your guide will share insights about this location along the route and explain the real oil pipeline that transports Caspian oil westward.
These industrial landscapes make tours in Azerbaijan more engaging and informative, showing not only nature and ancient history but also the scale of the country’s industrial development.
Azerbaijan is one of the countries with the highest concentration of mud volcanoes in the world. The landscape around Gobustan resembles a lunar surface: gray clay soil, craters, bubbling mud, and an unusual silence create a truly mystical atmosphere.
According to local legends, these areas were inhabited by djinns, and the volcanoes themselves were believed to possess magical properties. Visiting the Mud Volcanoes tour gives guests the chance to witness a rare geological phenomenon and take striking photos of this extraordinary landscape.
The final part of the tour is a visit to the region’s main treasure — the ancient Gobustan tour petroglyphs, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
During a walk through the protected area, you will see rock carvings created thousands of years ago. The guide will explain the evolution of humans, the living conditions of Homo sapiens, their traditions, daily life, and social structure. These scenes of hunting, rituals, and everyday activities offer a new perspective on human history and connect visitors with distant ancestors.
The Gobustan petroglyphs hold a special place among tours Azerbaijan, as they most vividly reveal the prehistoric period of the region and its cultural legacy.
